5 Things I Learned From Getting a Puppy (and the Yamas)

Last year, my husband and I got a puppy named Indie, and our lives haven't been the same since. We hadn’t had a dog in over a decade, so the disruption to our routine was significant—but it’s been such a rewarding experience. Over the past year, I’ve learned many lessons from Indie and often reflected on how they connect to the ethical guidelines of yoga, the Yamas. If you’re unfamiliar, the Yamas include Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Bramacharya, and Aparigraha—principles for living a balanced and meaningful life. Here’s what Indie has taught me about them:
Ahimsa (Non-Harming): Indie’s gentle growl lets us know she needs her space—a reminder to respect boundaries before frustrations boil over. She’s teaching me to notice my own “soft growls” and practice peace of mind and body.
Satya (Truth): Indie embodies unconditional love, showing compassion for everyone she meets. Her example encourages me to see love in all beings and embrace the truth that love is at our core.
Asteya (Non-Stealing): Indie’s biggest pet peeve is me picking up my phone when she craves attention. She reminds me to value presence and avoid stealing moments of connection by being distracted.
Bramacharya (Moderation): As a high-energy cattle dog, Indie requires balance between activity and rest—something she manages naturally. Observing her helps me recognize my own need for rest and energy management.
Aparigraha (Letting Go): Indie’s playful nature reminds me to loosen my grip on rigid routines and welcome adaptability. Letting go of habits that no longer serve me is liberating.
Getting a puppy has been a wild ride, but Indie is teaching me so much about life and love. She’s helped me invite joy and abundance while releasing what doesn’t serve me anymore. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be her guardian and to learn how to live yoga more fully off the mat.
