Teaching Handstands in Bali

ree

If you know me, you know this was inevitable: during my 300-hour yoga teacher training in Bali, I had to teach a handstand workshop. It wasn’t just a playful detour—it was a dream come true.

Handstands have always held a special place in my heart. They’re bold, exhilarating, and often misunderstood. For many yogis, they feel elusive or even intimidating. We’re rarely given clear, accessible instructions on how to begin, where to place our hands, how to engage our core, or what it means to fall safely. So we avoid them. Or we try once, wobble, and decide they’re not for us.

But here’s the truth: handstands aren’t reserved for the fearless or the flexible. They’re for anyone willing to explore, to play, and to trust the process.

In Bali, I had the honor of guiding my fellow YTT classmates—my girls—through this journey. And wow, did they show up. With curiosity, courage, and a whole lot of laughter, they surprised themselves. Each person tapped into a confidence they didn’t know they had. They kicked up, they fell, they tried again. And in that space of effort and encouragement, something shifted.

We weren’t just learning a pose. We were rewriting the stories we’d told ourselves about what we could and couldn’t do.

Teaching this workshop was pure joy. To witness someone go from “I can’t do that” to “I just did” is the kind of magic that keeps me teaching. It’s why I believe in accessible, empowering instruction.
